LOSS
ASSESSORS - HOW THEY HELP THE POLICYHOLDER
|
When
you make a claim
against your insurers,
you
have every right
to expect them to
honor
their contract with
you. Your insurance
policy is a legal contract
which contains terms,
conditions, exclusions,
and 'small print' all
of which are open to
interpretation. Can
you confidently claim
to understand ALL
of the policy wording
and do you know how
the insurance company
is likely to respond
to your claim?
|
|
The LOSS ASSESSOR is YOUR professional. He
is there to fight YOUR corner and represent YOUR interests. Your
insurers will employ a LOSS ADJUSTER to
protect THEIRS. |
The Loss
Adjuster's job is,
firstly, to try to
avoid paying anything
at all by repudiating
liability and, secondly,
if they have to, to
pay the legal minimum.
YOUR
ASSESSOR WILL ENSURE
YOU RECEIVE YOUR FULL
ENTITLEMENT AND THE
MAXIMUM SETTLEMENT
WHICH YOUR POLICY ALLOWS.
In
addition, a Loss Assessor
will save you a great
deal of time and inevitable
aggravation. You
can rest assured that
your claim is being
handled by professionals
whose sole aim is to
protect YOUR interests
and bring about a speedy
settlement.

|
| WHO'S
WHO AND THE ROLES
THEY PLAY |
|
THE
INSURED
That's
you! If you've
suffered a loss after
a fire, flood or
burglary, you should
claim on your insurance. If
you suffer injury
through the fault
of a third party,
you can claim against
whoever is responsible
(through their insurers). You
can then become the
CLAIMANT.
THE
INSURANCE BROKER
Usually
an agent for many insurance companies, the insurance
broker's job is finding the best policy to suit your
needs at the best price. Rather than dealing
with many insurance companies yourself
|
| you
may prefer to place all your insurance business through one
reliable broker. As well as being a source of professional
advice at no extra cost, this can simplify your own administration. |
THE INSURANCE COMPANY
Today's
complex society could not function without the Insurance Companies
who are the ones carrying all the financial risk. Their function should be to
give peace of mind to the Insured by providing compensation
with the minimum of delay after an emergency. However,
as the Insurance Companies must also protect their own and
their shareholders' interests, they are unlikely to offer
a settlement without extensive enquiries which can leave
the Claimant feeling like the arsonist or burglar himself!
THE LOSS ADJUSTER
Your
Insurance Company will instruct an in-house claims inspector
or a Loss Adjuster to investigate almost all claims over £1,000. He may appear to be independent
but he is paid by, and reports back to, the Insurance Company. You
do not see his report. His task is to establish what,
in HIS opinion, it should cost to repair or replace the damaged
or stolen property.
A settlement where the Claimant and the Loss
Adjuster are in total agreement is rare indeed! Many
claimants agree to the Loss Adjuster's proposals just to
avoid further distress and disruption.
THE INSURANCE CLAIM LOSS ASSESSOR
Not
to be confused with the Loss Adjuster (see above), the Insurance
Claim Loss Assessor is a professional whose sole concern
is to negotiate insurance claims on behalf of his clients. He
takes over every detail; filling in the claim form, meeting
the Loss Adjuster, preparing schedules, telephoning, writing
to, negotiating and, often, arguing with the Loss Adjuster
until the claim is settled to the Claimant's satisfaction.

Let

The
discovery that someone has violated the
privacy of your home is traumatic; the
distress invariably arising when claiming
from insurers may be as bad or even worse. |

Your
home is probably your main asset.
Structural faults will have a
seriously detrimental
effect on its value. Remedial
works, if not carried out properly,
will be
noted by the buyer's surveyor
when you try to sell and will
either put
them off completely or result
in a substantial price reduction
It is important
that insurers are notified immediately
you suspect a problem. |

No
matter how comprehensively insured
the business is, the consequence
of a fire or flood at commercial
premises can have a serious and
detrimental effect on the future
business and financial health of
any company. If not professionally
handled, the insurance settlement
following the incident can leave
the company under-capitalised and
disadvantaged |
