Burglary

The discovery that someone has violated the privacy of your home is traumatic; the distress invariably arising when claiming from insurers may be as bad or even worse.  Searching enquiries by insurers and disputes over values and ownership are needlessly upsetting.  Often insurers demand written statements regarding the circumstances of the theft leaving the claimant, the innocent victim, feeling like a criminal.

The onus of proof of ownership and value will always rest with the claimant and this can be very difficult if receipts and valuations do not exist.

If the small print in the policy regarding security requirements throughout the house has not been complied with,  insurers may try to turn down the entire claim, even if the burglar's entry to the property was made through a door or window which did comply.

Experience shows us that most people are under-insured or, if not in total, at least in those sections most vulnerable to theft.  Insurers will make distinctions between valuables, personal possessions and 'high risk' items each of which will generally have specific limits placed upon them.  Definitions of the various categories will vary according to the insurer with, for example, TVs and cameras included with valuables or personal possessions.  If under-insurance is evident then settlement will be, at best, on a pro-rata basis.

Note, however, if you are under-insured, some insurers will void your policy entirely and your claim will not be paid.  Insurers increasingly are exercising their option to insist on replacing items themselves which may not suit you, especially where a stolen item was of sentimental rather than monetary value.  Your Loss Assessor is best equipped to overcome these and other potential pitfalls.

Your insurers will employ a LOSS ADJUSTER to protect THEIR interests.  The Loss Adjuster may claim to be impartial but experience does not support this.  At a recent lecture, the INSURANCE OMBUDSMAN himself told his audience of Loss Adjusters, "...its easy to see why people are wary of Loss Adjusters.   You always tell them how independent you are but, when there is a problem, you always weigh in favour of the insurance company".  One Loss Adjuster has openly stated, "... I've never been able to subscribe to the idea of impartiality, if I'm paid by an insurer, I cannot be impartial".

SALMON ASSESSORS will formulate and negotiate your claim to obtain the maximum entitlement under the terms of the policy.  They will be present at all meetings with the Loss Adjuster to ensure you are not pressured into accepting an inadequate or unfair settlement.  You wouldn't dream of handing a legal or taxation matter without professional advice.  Your insurance policy is a legal contract and your claim should be put into the hands of experts.  Salmon Assessors ARE the acknowledged experts, working for you.

Your home is probably your main asset. Structural faults will have a seriously detrimental effect on its value. Remedial works, if not carried out properly, will be noted by the buyer's surveyor when you try to sell and will either put them off completely or result in a substantial price reduction It is important that insurers are notified immediately you suspect a problem.
