What is an Insurance Loss Adjuster?

When you make a claim of over £1,000, your insurance company will appoint an Insurance Loss Adjuster to investigate your claim. The Loss Adjuster’s task is to establish what in his opinion it should cost to repair the damage or replace stolen possessions. Loss adjusters always stress that they provide a completely independent service and are not directly employed by the insurance companies. However, because they are paid by your Insurers, you might, not unreasonably, be drawn to the conclusion that their independence is compromised and seldom falls in your favour.

Are Loss Adjusters impartial?

Certainly Loss Adjusters claim to be impartial, but we strongly suggest that you are not fooled by that claim of impartiality!  When your insurance company is looking to hire the services of a Loss Adjuster, they will obviously choose those who offer the most ‘efficient’ service – in other words, those who have proven to them on many occasions that they are the best at ‘knocking down’ policyholders’ claims. It is, quite obviously, in the Loss Adjuster’s interest to ‘side’ with your insurance company not least because they are motivated to decrease the size of your claim in order that they can convince their employers, your Insurers, to give them more repeat business.  Even the Insurance Ombudsman himself confirmed that when there is difference of opinion between the Insurer and the Insured, the Loss Adjuster will always resolve the matter in favour of the insurer.  Indeed, we could not have put it better ourselves!

What do Loss Adjusters really do?

In reality, the sole function of the Loss Adjuster is to make sure that your Insurers pay you the least amount that they can get away with and, in some cases, not to pay out at all. In our many years of experience, we have yet to meet even a single Insurance Loss Adjuster who has actually increased a policyholders claim……we have only seen claims decreased. On various occasions we have found that Loss Adjusters actually delay the settlement of your claim in the hope that you might agree to a lower settlement so as to avoid further stress and disruption to your everyday life. This psychological ‘wearing down’ tactic is not uncommon.

Settlements where both the Claimant and the Loss Adjuster are in total agreement are rare. Many policyholders simply agree with the Loss Adjuster’s initial settlement proposals to avoid further ‘hassle’.  It is our experience that a policyholder when not represented by a Loss Assessor is generally far too quick to sign the ‘Form of Acceptance’ which the Loss Adjuster asks you to sign on behalf of your Insurers.
